children's bookChopi and King Samovar - Children's book

The book ”Chopi and King Samovar” creates a life-like situation of an important matter – belonging.  Ceramic vessels come to life in a carousel of events, shrouded in sensitivity, and spectacular dynamism.

Chopi, a small ceramic vessel is “a little boy with a deeply cracked face but with eyes that sparkle with curiosity and imagination.” He was born with certain imperfections. Although the child is of high social rank, he is forced to live with his Grandma, Tefania, isolated from the rest of the society he desperately wants to be a part of.

Due to social obstacles, he leaves the house only at night, in order to avoid mockery but also to work and bring in some pennies to his Grandma, to be able to afford daily living. The action takes place in a fictional kingdom called Naharan, whose king Takumi reigns without making any public appearance.
The kingdom is governed by strict laws that separate the inhabitants with defects from those who claim not to have them.

The Official Assembly of the land called “The Enlightened Pots Assembly”, is made up of sages who abide by the strict letter of the law. They also make sure that the rules would not be broken even if this causes fear, suffering, and apprehension. In the end, King Takumi decides to have a public appearance and tell his people a great secret. From that point on, the laws will be changed forever and Chopi’s dreams will be fulfilled in a miraculous way.

At the same time, the skilled craftsman Wabi Sabi is empowered by the King to repair the imperfections of the vast inhabitants. Their defects will no longer be considered a sign of shame and isolation, but a symbol of courage and values.

The names of the characters in the story are made of compound words meant to describe the heroes. Some of them are noteworthy: Takumi, The King is open-minded, truthful, loving and concerned for the good of others.

Wabi Sabi, the Master Craftsman, is wise, talented, and respected in the kingdom. Through his art and talent, he manages to highlight the beauty and the value of the vessel.

Amatera is a great woman whose presence brings joy and happiness to those around her.

The art of gluing cracked, chipped or broken vessels with a gold thread is known in Japan as Kintsugi.

In this story this ancient art form receives a practical application from which both children and adults can learn: regardless of physical appearance or personal failures that have created emotional wounds, performance or talents, everyone is precious and valuable exactly the way we are and loved by the Giver of Life.

“Chopi and King Samovar” is a wonderful book for children and the young at heart. I bought it for my nephew who is bilingual (Romanian-German) so his mother reads it to him in Romanian, however, recently he began learning English so he will enjoy the book being read to him in English.

Before gifting the book, I read the book together with other siblings and enjoyed the rich language, beautiful illustrations, and storyline. It is a story that can be read and re-read, each time with a different perspective in mind. This story blends fiction with human nature and experience in a skillful manner.

    I wholeheartedly recommend this book!

  2. Ileana Trofin

This book has been written with talent, compassion and love. The beautiful story of little Chopi is a story of any one of us: children, parents, grandparents.
Chopi and King Samovar is a great and inspiring read!

  3. Veronica Lerner

Very, very good story. It is for children from 3 to 100 years old! I wrote an article about the book for a Romanian literary magazine. Thanks Daniela for this delightful book!

  4. Viorica Petrut Baetu

Engaging, easy to read and a fun way to help children build self-confidence, embrace what makes them unique and choose kindness. The illustrations, beautiful hand-made crayon drawings, add interest and clarification to the story.

The book was a great gift to my two grand-children aged five and the story was listened to in one evening and then again, several times; and they are still coming back (’encore!’) to it. And they never stop asking new questions. A real success!

It is a book that teaches children a different and new kind of strength: the strength of tolerance, of diversity, of accepting and making the most of one’s imperfections. The concept of imperfection is redefined according to a new perspective: that of finding value in flaws which in turn questions the idea of perfection itself. It is the Japanese philosophy of ’Wabi Sabi’ that teaches us to accept complexity and at the same time value simplicity; the gratitude for what we have rather than yearning for something new; the value of an old object that tells its story.
Excellent enlightenment and lesson for parents too. Congratulations for a wonderful work, Daniela Apostoaiei!

  5. Mary E Keppeler

This is a very sweet story with some wonderful life lessons. Are we all not full of cracks and imperfections? There is innocence, forgiveness, struggle and hope. There are second chances, there is wisdom, and love. So many things to discuss with little ones as this delightful story is read. Thank you Ms. Apostoaie for this book. I highly recommend it!

    Heres my review of …..

    Chopi and King Samovar

It is written at a reading level of division 2 (gr.4-6) The book is bilingual which is a great resource for language learning. It promotes and validates Romanian. A book like Chopi and King Samovar is one that would enhance and enrich either English or Romanian language learning.

This book is a reflection on society. It addresses the way groups of people can be treated, because they are different. It shows the harsh reality of system issues.

This book demonstrates humanity through Chopi and King Samovar’s life experiences. It illustrates that through the journey of life people can learn to let their humanness shine. Being human means acknowledging that human beings are, “human,” and at times, imperfect or fallible. To be human is to model genuine Empathy, Respect and Humility. (sounds like Cree philosophy)

It shows the way humanity is for certain groups like the wealthy and poor, the ones with designer clothes and the poor folk etc. However, the story addresses that people are more alike then different when it comes to being human. As people we have a lot in common no matter our soci-economic status. We all have the capacity to show love and kindness. Furthermore, to be real and not be pretentious, and to live the truth.

The story also demonstrates that even one good leader can make all the difference!

A good book to use to teach students about human values of love and kindness, or anti bullying lessons. Also, Acceptance and celebration of differences.

    Illustrations are great.!

    thats my two bits.

“Chopi and King Samovar” by Daniela Cupse Apostoaei is a wonderful book with a beautiful message of each person’s great value, despite our imperfections. I read it to my two sets of grandchildren, and both times the children were very enthralled with the story, saying “one more page!” at the end of each page, and “don’t stop reading, it’s so interesting!” I had to finish the book that day with them! My youngest grandchild who just turned 5 noticed the gold on Chopi on the very last page, very observant of her I thought! They all loved the story, really enjoyed the characters and the message. It is written very well, it’s easy to follow the story, and you really do want to know what happens on each next page! I recommend this fantastic book for children of all ages. Thank you to Daniela for writing this book, and to Andreea Hozan for the amazing illustrations.
